Day 1

Travel in your own car or by train to Llandrindod Wells in the heart of Wales. The Metropole Hotel, a delightful family-run 4-star hotel, welcomes you to Wales with a welcome cup of tea and homemade Welsh cake. If time permits, why not explore this former Victorian spa town where you can still sample the town’s famous spa water for free!

Day 2

This morning you travel by coach to Hay-on-Wye, known worldwide as the ‘Town of Books’ with more than 30 bookshops. Enjoy a stroll along the banks of the River Wye then wander in the maze of narrow ancient streets. A relaxing two and a half-hour canal cruise, including lunch, along the mountainside high above the River Usk is followed by a visit to the impressive Brecon Cathedral.

Day 3

Today a short ride up the famous Victorian Cliff Railway to the top of Constitution Hill brings spectacular views over Cardigan Bay along with a morning cream tea with scones in the cliff top restaurant. After free time and an opportunity to enjoy a stroll on the pier and promenade, it’s all aboard the Vale of Rheidol narrow gauge steam railway as it climbs the 12 miles through the scenic Rheidol Valley to the beauty spot of Devil’s Bridge, deep in the Cambrian Mountains.

Day 4

Today visit the Elan Valley by coach to meet a park ranger for a private tour of the Victorian dams that are the centerpiece of this magnificent 73 square-mile wildlife park. Then a surprise awaits. The Hall at Abbey-Cwm-Hir is a privately-owned manor house in 12 acres of gardens and one of the finest examples of Victorian Gothic revival architecture in Wales. The interior design and a truly astonishing collection of clothing, toys, music memorabilia, enamel signs, and much more will leave you astounded!

The Metropole, Llandridod Wells ****

Located in the elegant spa town of Llandrindod Wells, The Metropole is a family-owned 4-star hotel in the ‘grand’ style. There are 109 stylish bedrooms set across three floors. Each bedroom has ensuite facilities, with lift access to all floors. A traditional restaurant and lounge combine with contemporary bars and a separate brasserie. There’s free wi-fi throughout the hotel. Opened in 1896, the hotel’s reputation developed in the early 20th century as Victorian tourists headed to central Wales to take in the Spa waters, and breathe in the clean Welsh air. Today, the hotel offers a heated swimming pool and thermal whirlpool spa and a full range of Spa treatments. Still privately owned by Justin Baird-Murray, the great great grandson of the hotel’s founder, The Metropole was originally the largest Hotel in Wales upon completion. It remains the highest AA rated hotel and Spa in mid Wales. Justin and his wife Judy are proud of their family heritage. “This is a hotel like you imagine a hotel should be”, they say. “It’s a hotel offering a sense of place, sitting among the scenic grandeur that is the heart of Wales. We look forward to welcoming you to our home.”
