Experience the full extent of the area’s beauty with a selection of excursions including the enchanting Borromean Islands, Lake Orta, Lake Como and a journey on the ‘Centovalli’ Railway.
Wednesday 08 October
Travel to Lake Maggiore.
Make our way to our chosen departure airport for the flight to Milan Malpensa where we will be met by our Greatdays representative. Transfer to our hotel in beautiful Baveno.
Thursday 09 October
Lake Orta and Omegna Market.
A short drive takes us to romantic Lake Orta where we will make the short boat crossing to the little island of St. Giulio, famous for its 4th century church and benedictine monastery. From here, we will drive to the nearby lakeside resort of Omegna for a visit to their weekly market. There will be time to browse before we head back to the hotel via Arona and a view of the St. Charles Statue.
Friday 10 October 20
Palaces and Gardens of the Borromean Islands.
Enjoy a spectacular day on Lake Maggiore visiting the Borromean Islands by boat. Isola Bella with its splendid Baroque Palace and majestic terraced gardens offer unparalleled views of the lake. Isola Madre, the largest island, where we will visit the House of Borromeo and an interesting collection of puppets and theatres and last but not least, Isola dei Pescatori ‘the Fisherman’s Island’, and probably the most picturesque with a collection of restaurants, cafes and bars.
Saturday 11 October
‘One Hundred Valleys’ Railway.
Our excursion today begins in the mountain town of Domodossola, where we will join the ‘Centovalli’ train for a scenic ride across the wild and romantic ‘One Hundred Valleys’ region until we reach the Swiss lakeside town of Locarno. Explore the old town before boarding the coach for the return journey to Baveno via Cannero and the ‘floating castles’.
Sunday 12 October 20
Optional excursion to Verbania.
A day at leisure to spend at the hotel or to explore Baveno. Alternatively, make the short boat trip across the lake to Verbania and the Botanical Gardens of Villa Taranto (cost for boat trip and gardens not included).
Monday 13 October 20
Como and Villa Carlotta.
Lake Como is one of Italy’s most famous and spectacular lakes. Como is known as the ‘City of Silk’ and where we will meet up with a local guide for a short walking tour which will highlight some of the main attractions including the imposing Duomo di Como with its bell tower. From here we will embark on a cruise along the lake to the tropical gardens of Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo. There will be time to explore the gardens before boarding our coach for the journey back via Lugano.
Tuesday 14 October 2
At Leisure.
Our final day on Lake Maggiore is do as you wish. Perhaps take the ferry to another of Lake Maggiore’s wonderful towns, Stresa, which is only a short distance away. Stresa is larger than Baveno and has a host of shops, bars, cafes and restaurants.
Wednesday 15 October
Return to the UK.
Sadly, it’s time to leave Italy and transfer to Milan Malpensa Airport for our flight to the UK.

Hotel Simplon****
Hotel Simplon is set in its own sub-tropical gardens, close to the centre of Baveno. Stresa is 2.5 km away. During your stay at the Simplon Hotel you can relax beside the swimming pool, overlooking the hotel’s beautifully landscaped gardens, or you can make use of the lakeside beach, just a few metres away.
The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and features large windows overlooking the garden and finely decorated ceilings.
Aperitifs and cocktails are served at the bar with terrace.
