Some of Shropshires fabulous events are set to return in 2021, so why not visit Shropshire in 2021!
Telford & Ironbridge
There was a time when the place in Shropshire now known as Ironbridge Gorge was the centre of the world. At least in industrial terms. This is where in 1709 Abraham Darby I discovered a process for smelting iron with coke instead of charcoal and, with his revelation, brought about the principles of mass production. In recognition of the regions contribution to life as we know it, Ironbridge Gorge is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Outside of Ironbridge we have Telford, the bright hopeful New Town named after the famous engineer Thomas Telford. Heres a perfect stop for shopping and leisure activities that include bowling, cinema, indoor snowboarding and skiing, and soft play.
Shropshire Hills & South
Much of south Shropshire is a designated Area of Outstanding of Natural Beauty (AONB) official recognition that its diverse landscape (hills, farmland, rivers and woodland) are vital to wildlife, tranquillity, culture and enjoyment. You need only glance at the ancient hills and rolling patchwork landscape to realise the importance of protecting this beautiful part of Shropshire, perfect for getting out and about in the fresh air. The most famous hills include the Stiperstones (which during Victorian times were the location of Europes largest lead mines) and the heather-topped Long Mynd which means long mountain in Welsh. Also, dont miss Bridgnorth, by the Severn Valley, with its museum, busy markets, and quirky town hall that straddles the thriving high street. Here you get a low town AND a high town, from which King Charles I declared the views to be the finest in all my kingdom.
Owestry & North Shropshire
North Shropshire has a landscape and vibe completely different from south Shropshire. Its just as interesting to explore. Here is where youll find meres and mosses, canals and towpaths, and quirky market towns in which to rest and revive yourself with good Shropshire food and beer. The Welsh/English border in northwest Shropshire means this region is rich in castles. Our village of Whittington is home to the romantic ruins of a Norman castle, free for visitors to wander. Just over the border is the UNESCO World Heritage site of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct Thomas Telfords stream in the sky.
