Weekend break to the Downton Villages, staying at the 4* Mercure Newbury Elcot Park Hotel

The Downton Villages and the Berkshire Countryside

You’ve watched every episode, as well as the hugely successful film, and now you have a taste for more! Bring ‘Downton Abbey’ to life with this fascinating weekend break to the Berkshire countryside. Staying at the Mercure Newbury Elcot Park, located in the lush countryside between the North Wessex Downs and the Chilterns, discover the tucked-away villages nestled in the 400 square miles of superb scenery. Furthermore there is a superb array of intriguing attractions, and nearby market towns to discover. There’s always something more to be discovered, so we've pulled together lots of ideas and inspiration for things to do in Berkshire to help you decide and plan your perfect itinerary.

The Downton Discovery

For those looking for the quintessential Downtown experience, we suggest starting at the maginificent Highclere Castle, home of the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon. The current design of Highclere was completed in 1938, when the 3rd Earl of Carnarvon brought in Sir Charles Barry to transform his classical Georgian mansion into a grand mansion that would impress the world. We also suggest a scenic drive to the picturesque Cotswold villages of Shilton, Swinbrook and Bampton, where some of the show’s outdoor scenes were filmed including St Mary’s Church, the village pub, the Library and Matthew Crawley’s house.

Charming Towns and Villages of the North Wessex Downs

If you’re interested in antiques there are lots of interesting shops and dealers in the Marlborough, Hungerford and Pewsey ‘Triangle’. The close proximity of these towns and villages to the Mercure Newbury Elcot Park means you have plenty of time browse in one day. For those with an interest in history there are fascinating museums and visitor centres in Devizes, Pewsey, Wantage and Whitchurch. They give an insight into the way of life and landscape of the area from prehistoric times to the present day and are well worth a day out.
